Blog: Privacy

There are many cons to new media and media in general but one of the major cons would be the privacy issues that people have to face when using these types of medias. Like for example, instagram allows you to make your photos private but others may still be able to see through your photos by looking through someone else's phone. On new media, you are never really secure in terms of privacy because the world wide web is public for everyone. Having websites like google and yahoo allow people to search your profile up if you have made a facebook or instagram or anything that is related to your name. New media doesn't allow for much privacy and that is one of the downsides of new media. It makes everything available for the public to see.

    You bring up really good points. Even if you just do a Google search on yourself and say your friend whose profile is public and they upload and a tag a picture of you, that picture will show up even if your account is private. It really sucks sometimes.

    It's true that even if you only allow your friends to view your pics, doesn't mean they are the only ones who will end up seeing it. Your friends can show their friends, repost your pic, etc. I think we as users of social media and new media in general need to just post things that we wouldn't mind if everyone saw. Also, there is no need for us to be posting everything we think, say, or do because it might just be too much information.

Creativity and New Media

What I did here was just take the facebook logo and turned it into e-book by using their logo and their font type. Many people do this when they are ripping off other people's ideas to create that they liked in the first place. Such as the Supreme box logo, many people like the idea of the box logo but want their own custom design in it, so they would take Supreme's box logo idea and just use different fonts to create their own design.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds can be used in many ways, one being such as having an area where you can explore and express your imaginations. For example, in a video game called Minecraft, it is a lego cartoon based virtual world created for children to be able to freely express their creativity and to be able explore the virtual world. Virtual worlds can also be used for simulations, escape from reality, video games, etc. The pros of virtual reality is that is can possibly and potentially be better than reality, it connects people, can be used for rehabilitation, provides a safe way to build skills in challenging or risky tasks, allows skills to be developed at one's own pace. The cons of virtual reality is that it can create a disconnection from the real world and the virtual world, it is costly, it could possibly reduce ones creativity.
